Bindiya Shetty - Volunteer of the Month for September 2019
Bindiya Shetty is Immigrant Services Calgary’s Volunteer of the Month.
We met Bindiya in the spring of 2013 when she joined ISC’s Volunteer Program because “Being an immigrant myself I realize the difficulties faced by newcomers to Canada.”
Outgoing and enthusiastic, she soon started providing office support to ISC staff on a regular basis. At the same time, she would translate from Hindi into English and vice versa depending on the needs of ISC’s Language Bank. In 2018, she started a steady commitment with ISC’s Employment Program which allowed staff and beneficiaries alike to know her better and enjoy the direct interaction.
Punctual and reliable, Bindiya completed over 360 volunteer hours so far, handling her tasks in a professional manner and always giving her best.
This is her story.
“I am a published poet and aspiring author, enjoying also my professional role as a workshop facilitator and mentor. I am passionate about public speaking, sharing my knowledge, and developing people’s potential.
I started my volunteering journey as a Reading Coach with elementary schools in Ontario and continued in the same role in Calgary. I then coordinated career speaker series which were met with tremendous success and at the same time started volunteering with ISC. Since then, I have helped in various roles with different programs and currently volunteer as admin support for the Employment Bridging Team.
Through volunteering, I have collaborated with amazing people, including Olympic athletes, CEOs, aspiring and established artists, and developed long-lasting friendships and relationships. I love the culture at ISC and am proud to be part of a team that works tirelessly to help newcomers in their professional journey in Canada."
In my spare time I enjoy music meditation, museum excursions and creative pursuits like dancing, reading, and journaling.”
Thank you for your continued dedication to support ISC programs, Bindiya. Congratulations!
