Sadia
Afrin

Sadia, an urban planner with five years of professional experience, is passionate about cities, people and people’s everyday movements within the city.

She was born and raised in Bangladesh, but has lived, studied, and worked in many countries before settling in Canada. After receiving her Master’s Degree in Geography and Environmental Management from the University of Waterloo in Ontario, Sadia moved to Calgary in the fall of 2014 with her family.

As she says, “I enjoy exploring new places and making connections with the local people.”

Sadia believes in helping others and bringing a positive contribution to their lives. With this optimistic mindset, she joined the Volunteer Program at Immigrant Services Calgary in March 2016. Being an immigrant herself, she felt she could easily relate to the challenges of new immigrants. Also, she wanted to connect with other immigrants and help them to adapt to this new country.

“I consider myself blessed to live in a multi-cultural society where equal acceptance of various cultures benefits Canadians to better mutual understanding and respect.”

Since then, Sadia has contributed over 70 hours, volunteering to provide administrative support, assist in organizing workshops, and engage in community outreach events. She likes reading, cooking and traveling, and possesses excellent analytical and communication skills which made her a valuable volunteer in all the roles assumed.

Regarding her experience at ISC, Sadia says, “I am fully satisfied to be involved with ISC. This organization works diligently at integrating immigrants into the Canadian Society and helping them to explore their full potentials. Being an active volunteer of ISC, it gives me immense pleasure knowing that my volunteer work positively contributes to the new immigrants’ life. Moreover, the volunteering at ISC opens the door to giving back to my community.”

Thank you for your generous support, Sadia. Our sincerest congratulations!
