Volunteer of the Month - June 2017

Anne
Azucena

Anne joined ISC’s Volunteer Program in March 2016, because she wanted to utilize her skills by involving herself with the community and helping others. She had experience with tutoring children and enjoyed working with them, so being a volunteer tutor was the perfect fit for her.

“My experience with ISC has been so positive, everyone is supportive and friendly. I mainly tutor with the kids and youth; I can understand how school work can be a struggle at times, so I try to meet them at their level. It's also really fun to listen to their stories about their own experiences and interests.”

Anne has a Bachelor's Degree in Nursing, and is currently completing a course on Counselling for Women as feminism is her passion. In her free time she likes being outdoors, hiking, rock climbing, as well as making art with jewelry and knitting, and going on adventures with her friends and family.

By joining the Homework Club at ISC; Anne has been involved actively in helping immigrant and refugee children across Calgary as the club facilitates in different parts of the city. Just this year, Anne contributed over 55 volunteer hours.

She is generously contributing to other organizations too, assisting in roles such as a friendly visitor in a senior's home, a baby cuddler for women’s school, and facilitator of an immigrant women's group.

“Both of my parents emigrated from the Philippines and I was born and raised in Calgary. Being a second generation Canadian, I love the unique experience it provided me of integrating my cultural values with the Canadian life. I can see now how beneficial it is for society to be inclusive with diversity.

That's why I love volunteering for ISC because it provides those connections that may be difficult to find when you're starting on your own.”

We too love having you on our volunteer team, Anne! Congratulations!
