Volunteer of the Month - July 2017

Somayeh
Aghanabi

Before moving to Canada from Iran two years ago, Somayeh was an ESL teacher for 13 years. Soon after moving to Calgary, she became a certified ESL instructor through TESL, Canada recognized teacher training program.

Through accessing ISC’s services for newcomers, Somayeh became more familiar with our organization and expressed an interest in opportunities to help others.

“I got familiar with different programs at Immigrant Services Calgary. I met new people who were very helpful. I attended different workshops, and then I decided to volunteer.”

In May 2016 Somayeh joined ISC’s Volunteer Program and began assisting in roles such as translator, interpreter, tutor and community volunteer.

“I know a newcomer’s difficulties. I really want to help others overcome their problems as immigrants.”

Always eager to help and always present when needed, Somayeh contributed more than 65 volunteer hours in less than a year, supporting ISC’s Homework Clubs throughout Calgary where she tutors school-age children in English, and our Language Bank translating documents from Persian into English.

“ISC gives me opportunities to work with kids and do what I used to do in Iran. I really enjoy being helpful and assist others to deal with their challenges.”

Currently, Somayeh is planning to study Human Resource Management for future career. We wish you all the best in this new endeavour, Somayeh. Thank you for your support and congratulations!
