Volunteer of the Month- October 2017

Sabah
Vayani

Sabah joined ISC’s Volunteer Program in the fall of 2014 and contributed over 200 hours since then. Just this year she volunteered over 70 hours facilitating MS Office workshops that helped ISC’s clients to improve their computer skills, providing office support to different ISC programs or translating different documents from Urdu into English. Here is her story:

Born and raised in the cosmopolitan city of Karachi, Pakistan, I moved to Canada in 2014, I fell in love with Calgary the moment I arrived here, and knew that this was going to be home for me.

Moving to a new country brings about mixed feelings of excitement, apprehension and ambiguity, and for me it was no different. However, the endless support and generosity extended by friends and even strangers, to which I shall be forever grateful, played a vital role in enabling a smooth transition towards this new phase of my life.

Having worked as a Program Manager for a nonprofit organization focusing on social inclusion and economic empowerment of marginalized communities, I understood the importance of volunteering and wanted to engage in an organization with a similar philosophy. I was fortunate enough to be introduced to the Volunteer Program at Immigrant Services Calgary.

Whilst being a part of ISC provided me the opportunity to make a difference, it also enabled me to hone my skills and gain diverse experiences. I was mentored, encouraged, and appreciated on every step and had the privilege to learn firsthand from veterans in the industry.

It is really difficult to define volunteering since it carries many values within it. For me however it’s a never ending experience and I am sure that there will always be something new to experience with every volunteering opportunity.
