Volunteer of the Month- November 2017

Sandy Wu is Immigrant Services Calgary’s Volunteer of the Month

Sandy joined ISC’s Volunteer Program in February 2016 and has since contributed over 160 hours. Sandy has been a dedicated volunteer tutor at different homework clubs facilitated by ISC, but was happy to step in and support also activities such as Summer Connections Program, Club Kismet or Cooking with Friends. This is Sandy’s story:

My name is Sandy Wu. I moved to Canada in 2007 with my family from Taiwan. Currently I am a student in Mount Royal University, studying psychology in Honours program. I love to read and do some coloring in my free time. As a career goal, I would like to continue my education in graduate school to study counselling psychology, specialized in special education. Special education is a field that aims to support children and youth with special needs in their academic careers.

I started to volunteer with ISC in 2016. I volunteer as homework club tutor with ISC, and I have had amazing experiences and lovely memories with the children I tutor. I love to read and color with the kids, and I also love to chat with them about their school life and their dreams about their future. This volunteering experience is valuable to me because it helps me learn how to interact with children. I was not very good at interacting with children at first, but the more I talk to the kids, the more I learn how to interact with them. Volunteering in youth programs, like homework club and summer camp, helped me to be more familiar with how to interact with children, and how to resolve conflicts between the kids, and between kids and adults.

Staff who work in ISC are very kind, generous and approachable. They are always there to support you when you need help. ISC is a very good place to volunteer and I am looking forward to meeting new kids and staff in other programs.”
