Immigrant Seniors Book Launch: Food for the Body, Mind and Spirit
On January 29, 2020, students from the Community Initiatives for Immigrant Seniors Program (CISP) launched their second annual poetry and prose anthology, developed in partnership with Mount Royal University students and made possible by Family & Community Support Services. Food: for the Body, Mind, and Spirit is a rich collection of travel narratives, stories of love and loss, and memories from years gone by – all told around the central theme of food. Readers can not only expect deeply personal stories, but several tasty recipes from the seniors’ home countries included in the book.
Food: for the Body, Mind, and Spirit is the follow-up to August 2019’s A Colourful Life, a collection of stories and poems about the concepts of home which was commemorated by Josephine Pon, Minister of Seniors and Housing for the Government of Alberta. Over the course of twelve weeks, immigrant seniors worked with a group of university professors and creative writing students from Mount Royal University to design the book. For many, this was their first time exploring creative writing in a second language, and the program is intended to give immigrant seniors a means to have greater civic participation in their community.
