Alberta’s first smartphone app for newcomer settlement arrives

CALGARY, AB. – November 4, 2019 –

Moving to another country can be a challenging proposition, but help is now available with a tap of the finger.

Custom-designed for immigrants and refugees, Welcome to Alberta is a new mobile app built by Calgary non-profit Immigrant Services Calgary. The app’s easy-to-use menus provide one-click access to helpful services and gives users relevant information about key topics like where to collect important documents, finding a place to live, using employment services, and receiving directions to language programs.

“We’re excited for how tools like this can unleash the potential of newcomers” said Hyder Hassan, Chief Executive Officer of Immigrant Services Calgary. “Being able to connect with agencies and access important information through the app gives newcomers the ability to make strong, informed choices about their lives in Canada”.

A unique feature of the app is that it provides users with milestones and check-in points to track during their settlement journey. These milestones include things to do before arrival in Canada as well as things to do 2 weeks and 2 months after arrival. The pre-loaded milestones also allow users to add in their own goals, easily track their progress, and make amendments along the way. Each milestone has been added with to help speed up the settlement process and reduce the social isolation that many newcomers experience.  

Welcome to Alberta is scheduled to receive updates and new resources on a regular basis, including multi-language translations. It can be downloaded from the Apple App and Google Play stores, and more information can be found here: https://settlementcalgary.com/w2a-app/.

Welcome to Alberta was made possible with the support of Immigration, Refugees, and Citizenship Canada and comes on the heels of Immigrant Services Calgary’s success with Settlement Calgary, an interactive settlement platform that hosts the province’s largest non-profit career fairs for immigrants.
