Sandy Wu is Immigrant Services Calgary’s Volunteer of the Month
Sandy joined ISC’s Volunteer Program in February 2016 and has since contributed over 160 hours. Sandy has been a dedicated volunteer tutor at different homework clubs facilitated by ISC, but was happy to step in and support also activities such as Summer Connections Program, Club Kismet or Cooking with Friends. This is Sandy’s story:
Sabah joined ISC’s Volunteer Program in the fall of 2014 and contributed over 200 hours since then. Just this year she volunteered over 70 hours facilitating MS Office workshops that helped ISC’s clients to improve their computer skills, providing office support to different ISC programs or translating different documents from Urdu into English. Here is her story:
“Born and raised in the cosmopolitan city of Karachi, Pakistan, I moved to Canada in 2014, I fell in love with Calgary the moment I arrived here, and knew that this was going to be home for me.

Yuchen joined ISC’s Volunteer Program in the summer of 2013 and was quick to engage in different activities.
At first, she was an interpreter assisting newcomers who faced language barriers. Soon after, she started assisting ISC’s Seniors’ Program with various activities and workshops designed to improve participants’ English language and computer abilities. Yuchen completed over 40 volunteer hours in 2017, which added to a total exceeding 200 hours so far. This is her story.
Yara joined ISC’s Volunteer Program in June 2016 and from the start she has been very active in the program. As an ISC volunteer, she completed various interpretation and translation assignments from Arabic into English and vice versa, and also assisted with the delivery of computer classes for Syrian refugees. So far she contributed over 75 volunteer hours to several different ISC programs. Here is her story.
To celebrate Canada’s 150, London Drugs “adopted” two ISC families who are new to Canada. Over the last few weeks, London Drugs Brentwood location has been working with their customers to provide these two families with some donations to help them settle into their new homes here in Calgary.
Before moving to Canada from Iran two years ago, Somayeh was an ESL teacher for 13 years. Soon after moving to Calgary, she became a certified ESL instructor through TESL, Canada recognized teacher training program.
Through accessing ISC’s services for newcomers, Somayeh became more familiar with our organization and expressed an interest in opportunities to help others.
“I got familiar with different programs at Immigrant Services Calgary. I met new people who were very helpful. I attended different workshops, and then I decided to volunteer.”
This summer, ISC is offering the Connections Summer Program for immigrant and refugee children age 8-12 who have been in Canada less than five years.
Anne joined ISC’s Volunteer Program in March 2016, because she wanted to utilize her skills by involving herself with the community and helping others. She had experience with tutoring children and enjoyed working with them, so being a volunteer tutor was the perfect fit for her.
